I'm in love with my Laser cutting project. It is now as I planned it - but then again which ITP project is- yet it is every inch of beautiful.
The day the assigment was sent out we were bashed with the news of USA's newly elected president. This is no place to discuss politics, but what is well known is that the news caused a generalized sense of sorrow and misundrestanding. Having to design within that environment I gravitated towards those things that made me happy from back home, and the first idea that surfaced was this song that says "Canta y no llores" (Sing and don't cry)
So I decided I wanted to design a 3D Poster with this phrase and for the graphical items to go with the poster I wanted to use tha traditional Tehuana dress.
After I started the cutting I realized how absurdly difficult my 3D idea would be, so I decided to stick with just producing a paper based poster.
So eventhough I had already used the laser cutter to work on paper I learnt so much more. I used the 75W cutter with manual focus, I also was forced into figuring out settings for both the 75W and 60W (80/10/50 and 80/40/500) and I find out that for the 75W using cardboard as support was a very bad idea (yes I started a micro fire), while using thin wood gave me the option of also etching some sheets with my design, which gave me two results in one.
So after several hours of cutting and building I am proud and happy with the results: a poster that shall remind me of the joy I learnt back in my home country.
